Came to this bug with same symptoms, Ubuntu 12.10 on Dell XPS M1330 with
Intel graphics(Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics
Controller) - intermittently the screen would freeze, but usually I had
control of the mouse still but couldn't click on anything, also couldn't
CTL+ALT+F{1-6} to a shell - but I could SSH in and had full CLI access.
I posted the errors from Xorg.0.log below.

I think I have found a solution here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168312

I added:
  Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
to the Display section in xorg.conf, and so far so good. Thought I would put
this out there for others to try.

(EE) [mi] These backtraces from mieqEnqueue may point to a culprit higher up
the stack.
(EE) [mi] mieq is *NOT* the cause. It is a victim.
(EE) [mi] EQ overflow continuing. 100 events have been dropped.
