My solution, on a 13.04 system: use the standard language settings (not the tweaks typing thing) and then add the extension "AppIndicator support". Open configuration and choose "panel" for keyboard. Now you have the keyboard status indicator in the gnome panel. Voilà . Ou est voilá? :-) HTH
