Looks like dependencies on grub are mostly okay at this point, ran apt-
get remove grub* without issues, have to explicitly reinstall efibootmgr
afterwards though.

haven't tested, but  might be the mount state of drives with other OS.
In both 12.04 and other distros, there are several differences in grub
detection based on how drives are mounted when grub-update runs.

if possible trying to have other drives mounted somewhere under / when
grub updates *might* speed things up and give the fans break. next time
i'm in that situation i'll test.
