Confirming this bug. It only occurs when Thunderbird and Firefox are accessing some resource at the same time. If you wait 30 seconds between startingthe applications it is fine. If you access a link from within thunderbird with firefox it will kill the system as well.
Only occurs on i686 machines that were built during the early days of 64 bit. does not happen on quad core machines or 32 bit machines. Does not happen in virtualbox installs. I manage a small school with about 30 computers.
