OK, I think I have resolved my problems with suspend on lid close and they had
nothing to do with K/Ubuntu.
First of all, the power button problem I described above was caused by some
acpid scripts in /etc/acpi, after I uninstalled it, pressing the power button
would put the laptop to sleep just as I had setup in the system power
management settings.

As far as the lid is concerned, it turned out to be a problem with my last bios
upgrade.  Apparently you are supposed to completely power down the bios
(separate it from the battery) for a few seconds so the new bios settings can
take effect.  To do this one has to depress a tiny little button in the bottom
of the laptop using a paperclip while the laptop is disconnected from a power
source. To start it again, you first have to connect a powersource to the
laptop, or it wont start.
After I did this, everything started working fine.  Infact everything is
working perfectly on my
NP900X4C-A04US Samsung laptop.  I’m loving the new 10.10 release.

As far as comment #6 is concerned, I believe the screen turning off on lid
close is being controlled by the hardware and not the OS. So that behavior is
normal and expected.
I hope this helps others out there.. took me a whole month and a half to figure
this out.
I’m now going to mark this bug as resolved.
Thanks
