Is there anything unusual about your setup? Have you followed any advice to 
modify various files? 
Have you ever installed the binary drivers "by hand" or have you always used 
the repositories? Can you upload your
/etc/fstab
file?
After rebooting (and the NVIDIA driver failing to load?) can you post the 
output of:
dmesg | tail
lsmod | grep nv
modprobe nvidia
lsmod | grep nv
sudo depmod
modprobe nvidia
lsmod | grep nv
sh -x /sbin/lrm-video nvidia
dmesg | tail
?
