I have EeePC 1001HA(wlan is AR9285) and troubled with same problem for a couple
of these days.
If you are running dual boot system, try reboot from windows and enable your
wlan then reboot ubuntu again.
This works for me.

I also found phy0 is hard blocked all the time while the problem occurs
and enabling wlan on windows unblocks this.

# rfkill list
0: asus-wlan: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: yes

After enabling wlan on windows, rfkill reported that pyh0 was unblocked.

# rfkill list
0: asus-wlan: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

That's why some of cases regarding this defect looks like "randomly
happened".

BTW I've occasionally seen similar problems caused by other wlan device
such as realtek drivers...kind of typical problem? ;)

Hope this helps a bit.

Cheers,
Max
