Honestly, this does not sound like a software problem, but a hardware
problem with your monitor. When you turn your monitor on, do you also press
a key on the keyboard, or move the mouse, to unblank the screen? (Nearly
all modern monitors will support DPMS to put the monitor in power-saving
mode when idle, so the screen will be black until woken up by some activity
from the computer.) If pressing a key is not enough to wake up the monitor
reliably, then you may have a bad monitor or monitor cable, or a bad video
card. If it's a software problem at all, it will most likely be a problem
with the driver for your video card.
