I was even able to boot that pre-existing Ubuntu GNOME install on sda1
after recovering grub, so just to recap:

I had a simple dual boot of Ubuntu GNOME and Lubuntu on a physical 80GB
drive.

I then used an Ubuntu GNOME 20131013 i386 image and chose "Erase disk
and install Ubuntu GNOME".

What actually happened was that only sda6 was erased. The installer
attempted to reuse other partitions but puked!!!
