As prices for full featured printers with PCL or PostScript have come
down and the fact that GDI printers have some disadvantages the number
of pure GDI printers is decreasing. So if someone wants to run a GDI
printer on her or his Linux Box they still can install that package but
most Linux users will have printers that are supported by the cups
system. And I think noone who has a printer that offers GDI and PCL or
PS will go for the GDI driver because printing is slower due to the
additional CPU load and the fact that bitmaps being sent to the printer
are usually much larger than a PCL or PS print file. Therefore it makes
sense to remove the driver from the dependencies because according to my
experience as to sales numbers of GDI printers and people using such
models is really small because of the disadvantages.
