Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Since updating to gutsy my dead keys stopped working in X (in the
console they are fine). This is on the latest xorg in gutsy
7.2-5ubuntu3. The keys just come out not-dead (undead ;)

~$ xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "de", "", "lv3:ralt_switch"
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "de", "",
"lv3:ralt_switch,grp:alts_toggle,nbsp:level3,altwin:super_win,compose:menu,grp_led:num"

~$ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
 layouts = []
 model = pc105
 options = [lv3 lv3:ralt_switch,grp     grp:alts_toggle,nbsp
nbsp:level3,altwin      altwin:super_win,Compose key    compose:menu,grp_led
