Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sysvinit

Online update from feisty to gutsy, after twelve hours of pacakges being
downloaded, all hell broke loose with error box after error box and
finally update-manager decided it could go no further, warned me that
the machine was probably unusable and quit.

Recovered by:
apt-get -f install
apt-get update
apt-get -u dist-upgrade
reboot
system starts, but only failsafe X session now works

The ubuntu crash report button is asking me to lodge a myriad of
reports, so here they all are.
