After further testing, it turns out that the problem is bigger than I
thought. First, uninstalling compiz and switching the session to GNOME
does not have any effect. I also noticed that the system halts by
logging out, restarting, shutting down, and changing to consoles (Ctrl +
Alt + F1 through F7). Using Ctrl + Alt + Backspace has no effect either
and there appears to be no hard drive activity when the system halts.
The only way to bring the system back up is a hard reboot or power
cycle.
