Just had the same problem trying to upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10.

My / partition is on a 64 GB btrfs SSD with /home on ext4 larger HDDs.
When I tried to install the update manager told me I didn't have enough space
on /. Deleted a few old programs, tried again, & it started.
When I came back in the morning to check on my upgrade I saw it failed part-way
through, around something related to python. (now the little icon text previews
show rectangular boxes)
No idea how to 'roll back'. I'm going to have to install from scratch.
Seriously inconvenient.
