Public bug reported: After upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10 (beta), system-devices-panel* icons are missing from the icon themes. This has the effect that indicator-session icon is displayed as default icon for missing image which is terribly annoying. The used icon names are defined in indicator-session's service.c panel. As a temporary fix I switched to using a different icon theme that contains the above mentioned icons, such as Faenza, ubuntu-mono-dark or ubuntu-mono-light.
