See questions 237059 and 237597. According to Actionparsnip this is a known issue and the fix is to use the proprietary fglrx driver (https://launchpad.net/~makson96/+archive/fglrx). However, the problem carries on to the new distro upgrade to 13.10. The upgrade reverts to the open-source Radeon driver. The upgrade actually failed preparing xorg. I had to hard reboot to the only working kernel, then use apt-get to finish the upgrade. Now, when I boot to 13.10 the screen is black at all times. I also prefer to use the open-source drivers, especially if the fix must be reapplied. At this point in time, it is unkown if the fglrx fix will work in 13.10.
