Public bug reported:
After logging in and seeing the screen go to black, I used a terminal to
"xrandr -d :0" and noticed the panning values were some huge negative
number. I also noticed that the name of the display connector read as
"VGA-0".
I have pinpointed the problem as xfconf because (by a mixture of process
of elimination and surgical checks) I remedied the situation by
eventually renaming the following file and logging in normally:
~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml
That worked. I noticed that in that file the display connector was
labelled "CRT1". I've never had such an issue when the display
connector's name changes (if that was actually it) but this one little
file should not bring down the entire system.
The display driver is: Radeon
Video hardware: ATI RS880 / 4200
How can this be avoided in the future and what really is going on here?
I'm glad to be posting this on the machine that was previously blacked
out.

- First and after logging in successfully to a black screen, I blindly
- opened a terminal with alt-F2 and used screen and xrandr to find that
- the resolution was correct, while the panning values were some huge
- negative number. I also noticed that the name of the display connector
