Since you are using a 3.9.x kernel, you need a newer version of the
nvidia-173 driver than what is offered in Lucid repos. Ubuntu
Lucid/10.04 desktop is now at EOL (end of life) support status, and the
nvidia-173 driver has since been updated to work with kernels up to
3.11.x, so I am marking this Fix Released. If you encounter the error on
currently supported versions of Ubuntu, please file a new bug with
apport or ubuntu-bug to gather updated information. Thanks.
