Sorry, should have noted this is happening in gutsy - but what else had updates this morning?
After a restart, the LaserJet 1100 did appear in the CUPS database list. I had already tried the "sudo aa-complain cupsd" fix suggested in one of the gutenprint bug threads, and that seemed to get things going in any case, but I can't tell if the printer/driver was autodetected on restart as well.
