Public bug reported:

Installed Ubuntu x64 Feisty
Could not boot unless picking "recovery mode"
After booting to single and continuing everything would work fine with no
changes
Updated OS to latest patches made no difference
Tried many things but nothing worked
Narrowed it down - simply adding vga=1 to kernel options causes it to work now
I wouldn't think that would have any effect, but removing this causes problem
to come back

Actual error received was

Cannot open root device or unknown block
please append a correct "root" boot option
not syncing VFS unable to mount fs on unknown block(0,0)

** Affects: Ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
