Being on Kubuntu Feisty, I thing I'm experiencing the same problem: When I mount samba share with smbfs, with appropritate fstab entry and either with a script or using the command line, the share appears "most of the times" as being mounted (witht the special green mark on the icon) in KDE (i.e. , /media in Konqueror or with the media applet on Kicker). When I unmount it, nothing appens, i.e. it still appears to be mounted in KDE (i.e. still appears with the green mark on the icon), event if the command "mount" or the Kinfocenter report nothing about this share.
I've tried to restart hal (by issuing this command: /etc/dbus-1/event.d/20hal restart), without any positive result. Overall, as far as samba shares are concerned, the KDE media system still seems to be unreliable.
