Updating my BIOS did not change anything. I have upgraded to 13.10, and now I no longer get the error message. Instead, dell_laptop.backlight=0 does not change anything, and I am left having to repeatedly fiddle with the keys or use "echo [brightness value] | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness" to change the brightness.
