Jussi, thanks for your helpful comments. Yes, this is definitely a product of that old memory controller problem. If you're experiencing this bug, the only solution is to find a torx T5, open the case, and disconnect the battery for a moment. This is a hardware problem more than it is a software problem.
Opening the case is fairly easy. There is a useful description with pictures here: http://www.ski- epic.com/2012_asus_zenbook_ux31_disassembly_teardown/ You don't have to remove the battery. Just pull straight up on the connector to the mainboard. There's a helpful little black pull tab for this.
