There is no gfxmode kernel argument, and yes, vga= is depreciated as it caused the kernel to make bios calls to set the video mode. When GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD=keep, it leaves the display in the resolution it had set when jumping to the kernel, which should automatically keep that resolution when you don't ask it to change it with the vga argument.
