It looks like something broke since one of the latest updates of g-p-m. On a MacBook C2D the applet (not very robust, hangs, 'has a mind of its own') and g-p-m preferences adjust the brightness, but the keys although raising the notification stick the brightness to the minimum and it's impossible to raise it.
