When you say "looks like a hardware problem", I'm not quite sure what
you mean. At first, I'd be inclined to agree with you, however it's
entirely new hardware, it passes memtest fine (for 12 hours), and
everything works perfectly, with the exception that I can't use all the
physical RAM. All the diagnostics seem to be OK.

I guess we could think of this as a (design) flaw in the
motherboard/chipset, which prevents it from working properly with the
current Linux kernel -  but I don't think that gets us very far ;-)   Do
you have any suggestions for further tests which could narrow this down
a bit?  Thanks for your help.
