I think this is because:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/russ# iwconfig ath0 mode ad-hoc
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device ath0 ; Invalid argument.
I need to do:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/russ# wlanconfig ath0 destroy
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/russ# wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode
adhoc ath0
