After upgraded Xubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10, I had a similar problem:
when I performed a login an empty desktop is appeared and the mouse
pointer was not visible more, while if I performed a login under Guest
Session the issue did not occur.
I bypassed the issue of my user by removing the .config directory.
