Gary has identified the fundamental cause. If libdbus-1-2 is removed, things will mostly work (the player will not use HAL for device enumeration, but it won't crash either). By the time Edgy is finished, libdbus-1-2 will be gone (right now it's just there for openoffice which apparently hasn't been rebuilt yet).
All the other warnings and errors that people see stem from this problem. If you stop the player seeing libdbus-1-2, it will correctly use all the system libraries and life will continue (with a single complaint about libpng but that's harmless). Also please note that the Edgy package is unofficial and not produced or supported by VMware. There are two additional problems, which I assume the packager has taken care of, which affect Edgy. 1) The vmplayer wrapper script needs bash but asks for sh. Edge switched sh from bash to dash with undesirable results. 2) For unfathomable reasons, the new desktop-file-utils version of install-desktop-file will aggressively reject .desktop files with Categories that it doesn't know about. My mind is boggled. Expect the next minor release to fix these problems, but in the meantime, you need to hide libdbus-1-2. -- vmplayer fails to start https://launchpad.net/bugs/47792 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
