For some reason after updating to 13.10 I was still on the 3.8.0-30.44-generic kernel, I updated to the 3.11.0-12-generic kernel about a month ago and since then I haven't been able to reproduce this problem. So the problem seems to have gone away. Is it possible to mark this as closed?
