Tried the above sequence of commands. 
Twice.
Did not help.
I even deleted all downloaded files by hand. No success.

I still get the following error message:

   Unpacking linux-image-3.11.0-13-generic (from 
.../linux-image-3.11.0-13-generic_3.11.0-13.20_i386.deb) ...
   This kernel does not support a non-PAE CPU.

The previous kernel version (which apt does try to update) is Ubuntu
3.11.0-12.19-generic 3.11.3

My CPU is an old Pentium-M, running on a TOSHIBA PORTEGE M200/Portable
PC, BIOS Version 1.30 03/15/2004.
