System hung again today but I was able to kill the X server (Xorg) with signal 3 (QUIT) by ssh-ing in from another machine on the LAN, running top(1) as root, and using the "k" command.
To recap the current status: running kernels 3.0.0 though the current Ubuntu 12.10 kernel, 3.2.0-56-generic, an undetermined condition causes the X server to cease responding to the keyboard and only respond to mouse movement in a hesitant fashion. Xorg may be killed by sending it a QUIT signal as root. The kernel magic keys may also be used to reboot the system (R-E-I-S-U-B). There are repeatable video artifacts that may be demonstrated using a Thunderbird message composition window that may be related to this hang issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1223055 Title: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1223055/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
