Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-16-server

My system (a core2quad 2.4ghz, 8GB ram running feisty x86) is running
significantly slower when using the 2.6.20-16-server kernel rather than
the desktop kernel.

The entire system has a very very sluggish feel to it, effectively
becoming unusable.

This is visible in the disk IO speed: ~60MB/s from a sata raid vs
~30MB/s under the server kernel.

It is also profoundly evident in CPU performance, although I do not have hard
benchmarks yet.
A basic example is the use of the program 'top' in it's default configuration.
Using the server kernel, top requires 40-60% of the cpu (!). Running the
regular desktop kernel, the top program never reaches a noticable cpu share.

Note: desktop kernel only makes available 3.2GB of ram, so that's not an option.

I would be most happy to follow up on this bug with further information,
benchmarks or things to try.

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu)
