Well that was pretty definitive, didn't even have to create a new folder
to wit - 
new 14.04 install from an image of a few days ago.
updated
created 2 new folders on Desktop, one empty, one with a file inside
opened both files from l. d. click - fine
added ppa, upgraded, restarted.
crashed on 1st attempt to open one of the existing folders, attached screen

(I think the major diff between what occurs on my lenovo & the Dell is the 
response time on the Lenovo (ssd) is much, much faster. 
On the Dell *if/when*  nautilus was going to crash it could take 5 or sec.'s, 
trying to move said window 'helps' the crash along
