I'm amazed that this bug bug is carried through the releases from 12.10
up to 13.10 without fix. Now i have rollbacked linthesia to the 12.04
LTS package called

linthesia_0.4.2-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb

an yes it start very well. It does not matter which font is set in
gconf-editor, this oldie package runs also mit "clean".

If it's complete impossible to fix a package over years, why is rollback
not the proper method?
