I have somewhat the same problem on an IBM T41. After upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy (using upgrade-manager) most of the Fn-key combinations stopped working.
I've tried to see if I could get any reaction from the keys by following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HotkeyResearch . However none of the 3 methods returned any output.
