When I booted into 3.5.0-44 to check how xinput identifies the touchpad,
the problem seemed a lot more severe and immediate. So I think later
kernels may have more of a problem with their implementation. That might
possibly help in terms of determining what makes the problem worse.

I'll carry on using 3.5.0-30 for a while to see if I get any of the
error messages appearing.
