** Description changed:

Whether I use my laptop running 13.04 or my desktop PC running 13.10, I
am unable to create a bootable USB drive from any ISO image, even images
like 9.04 that used to work fine.

  - I tried multiple USB keys
  - I checked MD5 sums
  - Unetbootbin does the job

There is no specific error shown on the command line and the message is
- only "Installation failed" (translated from french as launching usb-
- creator-gtk with LANG=C gives an error)
+ only "Installation failed"

The error shows up straight away without a delay after pressing the
  "Make startup disk" button.
+
+ UPDATE 1: I found the error log in ~/.cache and the error is
+ "UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc3 in position
+ 31: ordinal not in range(128)". I tried launching the app with the
+ command "LANG=en_US.utf8 usb-creator-gtk" and I get the exact same error
+ (my system is running with the fr_FR.UTF-8 locale)
