Ok I'm now able to manually change screen brightness with nvidiabl;

https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl

It came with a script that goes into /usr/local/sbin why this path is
beyond me and if it really matters....

Running like this will change the brightness;

/usr/local/sbin/nvidiablctl down
/usr/local/sbin/nvidiablctl up

Also  running like this manually works;
echo 10 | sudo tee -a /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness

But acpi_listen and xev don't show any output so I'm not sure how I can
map the F keys to /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness

Hopefully Canonical can look at nvidiabl and come up with something...
