Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug looks to be the same problem as Debian bug #729288 and upstream bug #698962. Can someone try rebuilding gnome-shell with the patch provided on the upstream bug report and report back here if it solves the issue with the icon not showing the correct connection state?
