Well this is nice surprise - today's daily (liveCD session) detects the
card (inserted after booting with an empty slot) without issues and
without any extra kernel parameters. There seem to be no logs on card
insert/eject (only the first time, when the card's driver is loaded),
but the relevant interfaces appear and work - I connected an HDD and
browsed the contents in the file manager, benchmarked with hdparm and
looked at SMART status and values with smartctl - no problems
encountered.

$ uname -r
3.12.0-7-generic

$ cat /proc/cmdline
file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet
splash -- maybe-ubiquity

~# ls -l /sys/class/scsi_host/
total 0
...
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Jan  2 18:41 host17 ->
../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.0/0000:02:00.0/ata16/host17/scsi_host/host17
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Jan  2 18:41 host18 ->
../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.0/0000:02:00.0/ata17/host18/scsi_host/host18
...

Attaching dmesg from this working system for reference. I'll now try
booting with the card in the slot, then eject it to see if the scsi_host
device is properly removed from the system.
