I do not think using a different driver is a true workaround. Like I said, nothing's perfect and it turns out the nVidia drivers are no different; I have other bugs with these and need to patch some of them, but it's always a pain to manage. That is something nVidia will hopefully fix, but what I am saying is beware if you think all your issues will be "worked around" by using another driver. :) They do wake up almost fine from resume, though.
I still get the error with the nouveau drivers on kernel 3.11.0.15, I will try the 3.12.y.z upstream version following the link provided in comment #3 (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds). Those are mainlne kernels and comment #8 is asking me to not use a mainline, so not sure what to do. I don't think I am equipped to do more than installing from PPAs.
