I'd be interested to see how you configure/boot qemu (the arguments passed) to produce an NVMe device.
I've just uploaded patches which should enable correct installation onto NVMe devices, but I haven't been able to verify that fully yet. Can you try images from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ ?
