David, I have found that my "bug" was solveable with instructions from the following gnome bug site. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=169441 Apparently, alsamixer needs numerous tweaks to make the record work, and Ubuntu sets such tweaks to the "off" position by default. Good luck. Susan
