fixed it by going to System > Preferences > Keyboard, apparently Left
ALT key was set for third level choosing.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: firefox-granparadiso

  Hi all,
the Alt+D shortcut (legacy binding for windows users) does not work
in GNOME but works in XFCE. This behaviour is on both firefox as well as ff3a7.
I talked with asac on #ubuntu-mozillateam as well as Amaranth on
#ubuntu-desktop & tried the following things. Asac told there is possibility
since I had run desktop effects i.e. compiz that it had taken over my
key-bindings. So to test it we tried to do the following things :-

  1. Do gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz before enabling Desktop
effects
  2. See if ALT+D works there, it doesn't
  3. Again do gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz on the CLI
  4. No change.
  5. End Desktop-effects & come back to the normal way of things, still no
change.

Not only ALT+D doesn't work but also ALT+TAB for cycling through apps
  doesn't.

+ I also went through System > Preferences > Keyboard shortcuts but
+ neither of the combinations are listed there.
+
Its most probably a compiz or some other issue & not an firefox issue
but till I know better I'm assigning it here.
