Managed to update the BIOS at last (by following the advice from
http://www.floccinaucinihilipilification.net/blog/2011/10/2/updating-
the-bios-of-a-thinkpad-x220-using-linux.html).
$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
8DET69WW (1.39 )
