Thank you for following up! Unfortunately, I pulled out the NVIDIA Quadro FX 550 and bought a cheap AMD Radeon HD 5450 graphics adapter a very long time ago now. I'm using the ATI open-source driver, and haven't had the problem since. I gave away the NVIDIA adapter.
