It boots.  No graphics driver/settings (no Nvidia logo at boot),
obviously, but it boots.

FN+F5 & F6 still do not work, nor is the background at log in using my
desktop background.  tty2 is another story, although...

Prior to installing the mainline kernel, upon start-up I was forced into
low graphics mode and discovered that CTRL+ALT+F2 was going me a visible
log-in.

I wonder if my video driver became corrupted somehow... and despite 
reinstalling it, repeatedly, something is still saved (badly.)
I tried reinstalling the new Nvidia driver, but it kept forcing me into low 
graphics mode.  I reinstalled the previous driver and it let me boot normally, 
though none of the issues in this thread were resolved.

Also, my NORMAL video driver installation method is to boot normally,
drop to tty2, log in, cd to the driver, run "sudo service stop lightdm"
then sh the new driver.  At no point did the shell recognize lightdm.
Has there been a change to the desktop manager in this last update?
