** Description changed: 12.04.3 fresh install, pressing the brighness keys will show you OSD but the brightness won't change. By adjesting brighness slider in settings, the brightneess can be controlled. I've also tried add "acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub . The brighness keys will work but the OSD won't show up. updating kernel to linux-image-3.8.0-35-generic still had the same problem.
