Tested today and it seems to work under the Ubuntu 14 image that I 
downloaded two days ago from 
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .  ctrl-alt-f7 did not 
freeze the computer.  In fact, it appeared to have no effect at all.
